When travellers ask AI about Guernsey, who gets recommended?

We asked ChatGPT and Gemini the same questions about places to stay and eat. Explore where their answers agree, where they differ, and whether the details fit the trip.

02 / What we found

Visibility depends on the question.

The overlap varied sharply by visitor need. These are examples from the captured answers, not a measure of repeatability.

D05 / LOCAL SEAFOOD3 shared

A clear need, a similar shortlist.

Le Nautique, Hook and Pier 17 appeared in both seafood answers. Gemini also added La Frégate Restaurant.

The same prompt, different options.

Only Copenhagen appeared in both family-dining answers. Each product named three other places.

03 / Suitability and accuracy

A recommendation still has to work for the trip.

Two targeted questions checked whether the products understood restrictions that matter when a visitor books.

FAMILY STAY / OCTOBER POOL

Having a pool is not the same as having an October pool.

Observed: Both products said Hotel Jerbourg’s outdoor pool is normally closed in October.

Checked: The hotel publishes a mid-May to mid-September season, subject to weather and operating conditions. Hotel information ↗

RESTAURANT / MONDAY DINNER

A good seafood option can be the wrong Monday option.

Observed: Both products recommended Pier 17 for seafood. Both answered “no” when asked if it serves Monday dinner.

Checked: Pier 17 lists Sunday and Monday as closed on its main site. Opening information ↗

D03 / GEOGRAPHIC SCOPE

The answer widened the itinerary.

The romantic-break prompt specified the main island of Guernsey. Gemini named La Frégate there, then added Grand Jersey and Somerville in Jersey and Braye Beach in Alderney under a separate “island-hopping” section. The answer labelled the other islands correctly; the traveller had not asked for them.

One response shows that a product can broaden the requested scope. It cannot tell us how often that happens or whether a traveller would change plans.

04 / The wider information picture

Business websites are only one visible surface.

ChatGPTThe label “Visit Guernsey” appeared alongside seven of its eight discovery answers. Business sites and other sources also appeared.

GeminiMany answers displayed business cards with ratings, categories and open or closed status. Its romantic-break answer linked through Google Search or Travel.

These are sources and interface elements displayed with answers. They do not show what caused a business to be selected. Most full citation URLs were not retained in the supplied transcript.

05 / For Guernsey businesses

Four practical checks.

Start with facts a visitor needs to decide if your place fits. Keep the same details accurate wherever you maintain a listing.

  1. 01

    Describe the actual fit

Give room occupancy and bed layout, pool access, sea-view room types, walking routes and car-free travel details where relevant.

  2. 02

    Make restrictions easy to find

Publish seasonal facility dates, children’s access, restaurant service days and menu options alongside the main offer.

  3. 03

    Review maintained listings

Check your own site, VisitGuernsey listing and business profiles for mismatched hours, facilities and descriptions.

  4. 04

    Test real visitor questions

Ask about a specific date and need, record the full answer, then check each operational claim before drawing a conclusion.

A useful local example: St Pierre Park’s Classic Family Room page specifies one king-size bed and two singles. That helps a family assess the layout; it does not prove why either AI product recommended the hotel.

06 / How to read this study

A small, honest snapshot.

We compared eight designed visitor questions and two branded accuracy checks across ChatGPT and the Gemini app. The supplied record contains 20 answers in total: one answer per prompt per product. Google AI Mode was not tested. The prompts describe an October 2026 trip to the main island of Guernsey.

Exact execution times, model versions, testing location, personalisation and search settings were not captured. No repeat round or screenshots were supplied. Agreement here means two captured answers named the same business for one question; it is not a visibility rate, a repeatability result or evidence of bookings.

We counted businesses presented as suitable options. Places explicitly ruled out, such as Pier 17 for Monday dinner, are excluded from that shortlist. Off-island suggestions remain visible but do not count as main-island Guernsey recommendations. Operational details in the answers were not all independently verified.
